From the time our oldest Jake was 4.5 years old he got it in his head he was going to stay up and watch the ball drop for New Year’s Eve. And being a very determined kid, there were years in there that he actually stayed up 'til midnight despite our hopes that he’d eventually pass out on the couch.
But even if when he didn’t make it all the way, New Year’s Eve was consistently challenged in dealing with a deliriously overtired child, not to mention what it meant for us the next day. Over the following years, I tried different tricks to get him down on time - playing the prior years countdown, or playing a New Years celebration that had already happened overseas but none of these ultimately fooled him and he would just say he wanted to stay up for the “real one with the ball drop.”
It seemed like Mom and Dad would never again have our midnight moment to ring in the new year just the two of us. Especially as we looked ahead to 2025 and our younger daughter Kyla now being of age to also try and stay awake.
Thus the concept for FakeOut was born and my company E1 Studios, a design and animation boutique, set out to create an authentic Times Square countdown for 2025.
This is outside the box of our typical commercial advertising work and was a different type of creative challenge. It certainly took some time, but we have digitally altered nearly 3 minutes of footage that you can now stream to your TV to give your kids an authentic looking "broadcast” of the 2025 ball drop! I love the way it came out and am thrilled to share it with all the parents out there who face this same challenge.
We’re hoping you’ll join in on the fun and share your #FakeOut2025 moment, but most importantly we’re hoping to give you a few well deserved hours to have for yourself to ring in the New Year in whatever way makes you happiest!
